Product Technology Solutions

Renewable Electric Energy Generation: Decarbonization of energy sources requires innovation with respect to energy generation and energy capture and storage.  Geothermal, Hydroelectric, Solar (Photovoltaic), Tidal, Wind and Biomass Conversion are among many energy sources being developed and refined.  Many required electric heating and temperature monitoring and control to optimize performance and uptime.

Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Fuel Production: Fuel cells, unlike combustion engines and turbines, produce electricity through electro-chemical reactions between fuel stocks (such as hydrogen or methane) and oxygen (from air or other sources).  Hydrogen is the preferred fuel source as the only emissions are water vapor and air.  Optimizing fuel cell performance often requires tight temperature monitoring and heater assist to ensure proper system function.

Large Scale Kinetic & Thermal Energy Storage Systems: Large scale energy storage is required to optimize energy generation and electrical grid / power grid uptime.  Large array photovoltaic systems, wind turbine farms, etc. store electrical energy in the form of heat energy for use during off-peak energy production periods (e.g. typically night time).  When electric energy is needed, the heat energy heats a fluid in a heat exchange system which delivers heat energy and/or electrical energy to the power grid.  Storage mediums are typically molten salt and minerals, but may also be phase-change substances, and other materials.  Heaters, temperature sensors and control systems ensure storage medium stability, temperature maintenance, and high efficiency.

Electric Vehicles:  Plug-In hybrid electric vehicles (combination battery & combustion engine powered) and full electric vehicles are the future of transportation due to their ability to dramatically reduce or eliminate carbon emissions.  At the same time, conversion to an electric vehicle architecture brings its own set of challenges to ensure electric vehicle and power system up-time and efficiency, along with replacing waste heat energy sources readily available in combustion engine systems.  These often need to be made up with electric heating, sensing and control.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations & Infrastructure: EVs need to be “refueled” through recharging the battery packs at charging stations located at homes or remotely at charging areas.  Climate control is essential to ensure charging station functionality and high efficiency energy discharge into EV batteries.

Battery, Battery Packs and Energy Storage Solution: There are a growing number of battery types in development to power the electrification of vehicles and transportation equipment: Legacy lead acid batteries, nickel metal hydride (NiMH or Ni-MH) batteries, nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries, and more recently lithium-ion (Li+ or Li-ion) batteries, to name a few.  High and very low temperatures can affect battery efficiency, amp-hours discharge capacity as well as rechargeability.  For cold temperature and cold weather usage, batteries often are outfitted with battery warmer or battery heaters in various forms to ensure high up-time, efficiency and chargeability.

Emergency Battery-Powered Generators: Engine-driven stand-by generators are used by hospitals, business and homes to provide immediate, backup electric power should the electric supply be interrupted.  Battery-powered emergency generation systems are now coming on the market to supplement or outright replace traditional generators.  Similar to EVs and battery-power devices, these systems often can benefit from heating, warming, temperature monitoring and control to guarantee system availability and performance in the most stringent settings.

Engines, Compressors, Turbines - Temperature monitoring in today’s sophisticated engines is paramount for proper ECM operation to ensure high fuel efficiency and low emissions levels.  Durex Industries employs a variety of temperature sensing technologies such as thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, and IC temperature sensors for use in its exhaust gas temperature (EGT), Turbo EGT, coolant, oil, air and head temperature sensors.

Gen-Sets & Compressors - In addition to engine temperature sensors, Durex also supplies high-reliability cold weather electric heaters and cold start aid heaters.  Whether fluid freeze protection or condensation prevention or just maintaining warm start conditions to allow engine cranking, we have you covered!  We supply fluid warming solutions for lube oil and fuelintake air, and gas heating, as well as basic battery warmers and other component warming solutions.

Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems - Durex custom designs and manufactures rugged exhaust gas temperature sensors used with Cat, DPF and SCR De-NOx systems.  We use similar technologies to EGT and TEGT sensors for engines in order to ensure long life in contaminated and high vibration environments.  We also provide DPF regen electric heaters as well as electric ignitor heaters.  SCR De-NOx systems solutions include exhaust preheatingDEF fluid warming as well as IC or thermistor sensors to sense DEF reservoir temperatures.

Cold Weather Products - Durex custom designs and manufactures high-reliability cold weather electric heaters and cold start aid heaters for Engines, Gen-Sets, Compressors, and other rotating equipment.  Whether freeze protection or condensation prevention or just maintaining warm enough temperatures to allow engine cranking, we have the thermal solution!  We supply fluid warming solutions for lube oil and fuelintake air, and gas heating, as well as basic battery warmers and other component warming solutions.

Power Plants - Durex provides heatingtemperature sensing, and temperature control solutions throughout dedicated power plants – whether diesel block plants, gas turbine or coal-fired plants.

We supply solutions upstream of the combustion zone such as fuel storage tank heating, and fuel gas and fuel oil preheating.

We supply solutions downstream of the combustion zone such as flue gas preheating for SCR De-NOx systems, ammonia/urea heating and air dilution heating systems.

We also supply ancillary warming systems such as fuel storage tank and water storage tank heatingSCR catalyst dehumidification, etc.

Test Stands - Development of new engine technologies, as well as proper factory test of manufactured engines, requires high reliability, precision temperature sensors and electric heaters to ensure accurate test results and long service life with minimal de-calibration.  Durex has many years of experience in supplying the leading labs and manufacturers of diesel engines in North America with temperature sensor probesheating probeswraps, and wire.
